We often hear about extreme travelers who let everything behind them for a life of travels, we hear also about people who like stay at home or travel in all inclusive but there are also the expatriated, these people who decided to live in another country without being crazy travelers.
But there are other personalities and life styles. I am one of them: Let’s call it “Half travelers”.
I am confronted to many questions and fears from my entourage; not only extreme travelers have to face that.
Misunderstanding by my relatives or by other travelers, this status requires sometimes some explanations.
Half traveler – What is it?
I consider myself like a mix of different personalities and life styles.
Actually, I apply to another job, looking at, the same time, to move to another country. Because of that, I can see new horizons, travel and live with different cultures. I travel but on the same time, I settle in during an unknown period of time but long enough (until now around 3 years) and change according to my mood and/or opportunities.
I lived in 3 different countries as an employee in IT project management, I am a good traveler, a culture and food addict and festive.
In each country where I live, I try to learn as much as I can, mix myself with the locale culture, learn traditions but also the life and behaviours in foreign companies. I like my job and see how people from another country are working always intrigued me.
I have my routine during the week and I spend my weekends to explore, to travel and escape. I agree, sometimes weeks are long between the job where I don’t count my hours, preparation for the weekends, for my travels, this blog…
However, I don’t think that I will ever stop this life at 300km/h. When there is a cultural even, I am doing my best to go there, learn as much as I can about it and meet amazing people each time.
Relatives are easily worried
Yes I am 30, I’m the eldest of a family of 4. Parents like to put you under pressure, whatever your life style. Even if they don’t agree with all of your choice, there are always subjects which come back during a meal like the famous “When will you definitely settle, find someone ?” Question that I reply “Settle is not planned for now; I am a traveler, not a nun and for babies, maybe one day… or not”. – Yes there is always this baby on board overtone.
Friends have (had) complications to understand my life choice. The first time I moved, they thought I ran away from my actual life, my past and were worried. It was not the case. I just needed to live something else. Bad experiences don’t scare me, they help me to improve.
My past is so rich that it inspires me everyday. I don’t want to erase anything.
Time past and some understood, others still skeptical.
A fear to lose contact after some time
My last two moves proved to them that if both sides want to keep in touch, friendship will stay. Sometimes it can be complicated to see everybody because the list gets bigger and bigger, I agree, but organize a travel together, visit them for few days and here we go!
A nomad life, even partial, does not mean only live with fleeting friendships, on the contrary!
One of the numerous positive points of this life style is that you create more intense links with some people that you will meet only for few days. The long term links relationships, which even strong after few weeks, become deeper and we know we will meet again.
The period of the year which scares the others but not me
Each time I leave a country, it’s at the end of the year, before the celebrations. People always wonder how I will manage the loneliness for Christmas or New Year’s eve.
No, I am not alone and I always find nice people who are celebrating somewhere.
The magic of social networks helps a lot and makes easier your arrival in a new country.
The misunderstanding of extreme travelers
Some extreme travelers who let everything behind them to travel think that I am scared to go further.
It’s not a fear but a life style more suitable to me. Even if I like traveling with my backpack, I also like my little routine. Traveling 100% of my time will not suit me for a long time.
Stay in a place for few months, looking for some quick jobs, partial time or not, is also not an option because I love my job
In short, there are such different ways to travel, you only need to find what suits you the best.
Mix a professional life and be a traveler is not impossible. Being organized is required to be able to do both sometimes, but I think this option is a good alternative and maybe a springboard to an extreme traveler according the personality.
I have done my choice, what is yours and why?
